Duty Precision Rifle

Precision Rifle I

Course Length:  Three days

 

Course Description: This three day course will provide the student with a solid operational foundation from which to deploy and operate a precision rifle in an urban or rural setting as part of a specialized team or as an extended standoff range option for LE patrol. Students will be instructed on bolt-action and semi-automatic rifle techniques as they apply. Students can expect instruction in all aspects of the precision rifle as it applies to utilization in law enforcement. This course extends into low light hours on day two and day three. Students must be able to shoot consistent 5 shot groups measuring no more than 1 and ½ inches at 100 meter from the prone position and have a basic understanding of their weapon before attending the course.

 

This course will cover:

 

  • Real world safety

  • The OODA loop, Information Theory, Hicks Law and Occam’s Razor

  • Legal considerations and addressing the precision rifle in LE SOPS

  • Equipment selection

  • Ammunition selection

  • Law enforcement sniper utilization statistics

  • Target anatomy

  • Precision rifle marksmanship fundamentals

  • Practical handling of the precision rifle

  • The optical sight (Mil-Dot and TMR)

  • Reading stationary and movable scale on the optical sight

  • Ballistic charts Data books and cards

  • Shooting positions

  • Zeroing the precision rifle

  • Weapon maintenance and cleaning

  • Range estimation and range cards

  • Practical and precision marksmanship

  • Tactical and emergency reloads

  • Malfunction clearances

  • Off axis shooting

  • Sniper/observer operations

  • Operating from improvised positions

  • Intelligence gathering

  • Operations in low light

  • Moving targets

  • Confronting hostage situations

  • Exigent deployments

  • Cover and concealment

 

Course Cost: $400.00 ($175.00 refresher for previous students space permitting)

 

Equipment:

 

  • Bolt action or semi-automatic precision rifle with a minimum four round capacity

  • Precision optics, target type with micrometer scale and turret type elevation and windage adjustments, adjustment knobs that can be turned by hand and do not require tools (such as internal slot adjustment) are required. Mill dot, TMR or Duplex optics are recommended.

  • Rifle Bipod

  • Rifle sling

  • Spotting scope/binoculars

  • Duty handgun

  • Duty belt and gear (gear should include a method to carry rifle ammunition at the waist)

  • 500 Rounds rifle, duty type (match ammunition is recommended)

  • 100 rounds handgun

  • Weapon mounted light (if carried)

  • Handheld light

  • Spare batteries for all lights

  • Night vision optics (if carried)

  • Shooting mat/drag bag

  • Databook

  • Ear and eye protection

  • Hat

  • Long sleeves recommended (pants mandatory)

 

Optional (recommended) gear:

 

  • Gloves

  • Sunblock

  • Hydration

  • Field cleaning kit

  • Basic maintenance tools

  • Knee and elbow pads

  • Additional magazines for all weapons

  • Kestrel meter

  • Laser range finder

  • Shooting sticks/portable rests

 

Class size: Minimum of 5, no more than 15

 

Prerequisites: Credentialed Law enforcement or military. Private security authorized to be armed may request attendance on a case by case basis.
